Your Diet and Gum Health Are Connected
Posted on 2/20/2019 by Kenneth D. Parrish, DMD, PhD
There is an old saying that is you are what you eat. The meaning of this statement is not always clear, but for most it means that the things you put in your body affects the way you look and feel. Your diet impacts more than just the amount you weigh or the amount of energy you have. It also affects your oral health. There are some foods that are very good for your oral health and some foods that are not as good. Learning what they are can help you keep a great smile your entire life. What Your Teeth and Gums Need Like every other part of your body, your teeth and gums have needs. They require certain vitamins and mineral to stay healthy. A good diet provides the teeth and gums with what it needs. Following a diet that is high in these things is not difficult. The foods that contain this not only helps oral health, but also improve the overall physical health. What Not To Do There are many foods that can cause problems for oral health. People look at the list of foods they cannot eat and think that means they cannot eat anything they enjoy. That is not true. A healthy diet is mostly about moderation. It is important to get the things that promote good health, but too much of a good thing is not good. There are foods that can cause a problem, but instead of avoiding all of them, it is best to enjoy them in smaller amounts. A healthy diet for good oral health is all about the balance. If you want help learning what you should or should not eat for good oral health, contact the dental professionals at our office for advice....
